Viral, Fungal and Protist Diseases Flashcards
what are the three viral diseases that we need to know
Measles, HIV and Tobacco mosaic virus(TMV)
how is measles spread
is a viral disease, and is spread by droplets from an infected persons sneeze or cough
what are the symptoms of measles
develop red skin rash, show signs of fever (high temperature).
If there are complications measles can lead to pneumonia
what are the treatments of measles
most people are vaccinated against measles when they are young.
how is HIV spread
HIV is a virus spread by sexual contact, or by exchanging bodily fluids such as blood. This can happen when people share needles when taking drugs,
what are the symptoms of HIV
causes flu-like symptoms for a few weeks. Usually, the person does not experience any symptoms for several years.
what are the treatments for HIV
when the person does not experience symptoms for several years HIV can be controlled with antiretroviral drugs
what is Tobacco mosaic virus
a virus that affects many species of plants
what are the symptoms of TMV
causes a mosaic pattern on the leaves of the plants - part of the leaves become discoloured.
the discolouration means that the plant cannot carry out photosynthesis as well, so the virus affects growth.
what is the main fungal disease we need to know
Rose Black Spot
what is Rose Black Spot
a fungus that causes purple or black spots to develop on the leaves of rose plants. the leaves can then turn yellow and drop of.
so photosynthesis happens less.
how is Rose Black Spot spread
it spreads through the environment in water or by the wind
what are the treatments of Rose Black Spot
by using fungicides and by stripping the plant of its affected leaves. these leaves then need to be destroyed so that fungus cant spread to other rose plants
what is the main disease we need to know caused by a protist
Malaria
where does malarias life cycle take place
inside the mosquito, the mosquitoes are vectors - they pick up the malarial protist when they feed on an infected animal
