Bacterial Diseases and Preventing Disease Flashcards
what are the two types of bacterial diseases we need to know
salmonella and gonorrhoea,
what is salmonella
a type of bacteria that causes food poisoning
how is salmonella caused
by eating food that has been contaminated with salmonella bacteria e.g. eating chicken that caught the disease whilst it was alive
what are the symptoms of salmonella
infected people can suffer from fever, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
what are the symptoms of salmonella caused by
the toxins that the bacteria produce
how can salmonella be treated
in the UK, most poultry is given a vaccination against salmonella.
what is gonnorrhoea
a sexually transmitted disease (STD)
what are STDs and gonorrhea caused by
STDs are passed on by sexual contact, e.g. having unprotected sex
gonorrhoea is caused by bacteria
what are the symptoms of gonorrhoea
get pain when they urinate, and a thick yellow or green discharge from the vagina or the penis
how was gonorrhoea originally treated
with an antibiotic called penicillin, but this has become trickier now because the strains of the bacteria have become resistant
how to prevent the spread of gonorrhoea
people can be treated with antibiotics and should use barrier methods of contraception, such as condoms.
what are some ways the spread of disease can be reduced or prevented
being hygienic, destroying vectors, isolating infected individuals and vaccination.
how does being hygienic prevent the spread of disease
using simple hygiene measures can prevent the spread of disease.
for example, washing your hands thoroughly before preparing food or after you have sneezed can stop you from infecting another person
how does destroying vectors prevent the spread of disease
by getting rid of the organisms that spread disease, you can prevent the disease from being passed on. vectors that are insects can be killed using insecticides or by destroying their habitat so that they can no longer breed
how can isolating infected individuals prevent the spread of disease
if you isolate someone who has a communicable disease, it prevents them from passing it on to anyone else.
