gingivostomatitis/cold sores, encephalitis with focal temporal lesions, neonatal herpes, keratoconjunctivitis
HSV-2
painful genital vesicles, encephalitis with focal temporal lesions, neonatal herpes, keratoconjunctivitis
VZV
chicken pox- asynchronous vesicular rash
shingles- painful vesicles in a dermatomal distribution
reactivation of VZV can cause Ramsay Hunt syndrome (Bell’s palsy, ear pain, vesicles in ear canal)
CMV
mono
in immunocompromised- retinitis, interstitial pneumonitis, GI disease/esophagitis/colitis
congenital- fetal microcephaly and periventricular calcifications
HHV-6/7
roseola- fever for 5 days followed by a lacy body rash that spares the face
EBV
mono
Burkitt’s lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma
HHV-8
Kaposi’s sarcoma
dark plaques/nodules on the skin
Molluscum contagiosum
flesh colored papule with central umbilication
Variolla
small pox- synchronous vesicular rash
HPV
serotypes 1-4- cutaneous warts
serotypes 6/11- anogenital warts (condyloma acuminata)
serotypes 16/18- neoplastic (anal, vaginal, vulvar, penile and laryngeal cancers)
Parvovirus B19
“slapped cheek” rash, raised indurated facial rash, arthralgia, myocarditis, fetus with severe anemia, heart failure and hydrops fetalis
Yellow Fever
jaundice, back pain, black commit, bloody stools
Dengue Fever
“breakbone fever”, retro-orbital headache, hemorrhagic shock, debilitating myalgias, thrombocytopenia
Zika Virus
fever, itchy rash, arthralgia, conjunctivitis
congenital- microcephaly and fetal demise
Rubella
erythematous rash that starts on the face, proceeds to the trunk and does NOT coalesce
congenital- cataracts, heart defects, hearing loss
Measles
rubeola
4 C’s- cough, coryza, conjunctivitis, Koplik spots
erythematous rash that starts on the head and progresses downward and can coalesce
Mumps
parotitis, orchitis (testes inflammation), pancreatitis
