There are many different attitudes to violence. Some believe that violence can be justified at the national level by fighting in a war that they believe is just but may be less willing to endorse violence in other contexts. Some believe that Jesus’ teaching in the sermon on the mount tells them that they should avoid seeking revenge and instead offer the other cheek. However, they might say these ideas only apply to individuals and not entire countries.
What do many Christians emphasise about violence?
Many Christians emphasise the importance of order in a society being the will of god and that as a consequence, Christians should try to support the governments of the world trying to take order.
What do Christians say about using violence as punishment?
Many say that where governments use violence in such practises as torture, this should be addressed, as abuse of another human being clearly contradicts the idea that all people are made in the image of god.
What is pacifism?
Pacifism is the belief that peace should be the central value that people pursue, this usually involves the belief that the use of violence to fight in a war or to defend yourself is not right. However, the Christian church has often argued for a just war theory, though there are many people to this day who campaign for non-violent resistance.
What do Christians think of nuclear pacifism?
Some Christians have made a distinction between pacifism and nuclear pacifism. A nuclear pacifist believes that the use of an automatic weapon can never be justified as the consequences of the use of such a weapon would never be equal to the evil that needed to be defeated.
What is a Quakers’ approach to war?
Quakers have been committed to pacifism from their origins as they believe that this is what Jesus requires. So, war is not right. They are conscientious objectors so they refuse to fight in wars. However, they may be willing to be involved in the medical care needed for for those caught up in conflict.
