Racism And Gender Flashcards
What do Christians believe about slavery?
The Christian church today condemns any form of slavery.
Name some occasions in history which have been described as racist
During the crusades thousands of people across Europe and the Middle East were killed in the name of Christianity.
The slave plantations of the Caribbean and the American Deep South were mostly owned by Christians.
What do Christians believe about sexism?
Sexism is a form of prejudice based on gender, typically against women. The church has often been accused of being sexist as the language used seems to be in favour of men and god is almost always referred to as make. This has led to a traditional view that man should go out to work to provide for the family while women bring up children and run the home. However, many Christians now feel that men and women should be given equal opportunities and responsibilities.
What is the role of women in the church?
In the Roman Catholic Church, women are not accepted as priests as it is felt that only men should say the spoken by Jesus. Because god came to this earth as a man, his representatives on earth should only be men. St. Paul said women should be silent within church. However, many other denominations have long accepted women in their ministry. Baptists allow women to be ministers.
