What is Sankalpa?
An intention.
Why do you place Sankalpa at the beginning of the class?
To create the intention for the class, which helps to connect to the practice.
What is Drishti?
Defined as sight, it is a focusing technique bringing us into awareness.
Why is Drishti used in asana?
It transforms the practice to be fluid, graceful, subtle, strong, purifying, and meditative.
Why is limbering so important?
To release tension in the upper, mid and lower back. Also to increase flexibility and body temperature to prepare for more challenging asana.
How does limbering impact anatomy and physiology?
Limbering warms the body up, releases tension in the joints, and prepares and protects the body for movements more challenging.
What is a counterbalance? Name one.
Counterbalance moves energy in opposite direction. Matsyasana for Salamba Savangasana.
What is a neutralizer? Name one.
A pose that moves energy to a neutral position so that you may move the opposite direction, or in the same direction further. Table top (Chatus Pada Pitham) after a back bend, or Adho Mukha Svanasana.
What is the difference between a counterpose and a neutralizer?
A counterpose moves the energy in the opposite direction, while the neutralizer brings the energy to neutral and can allow opposite movement or further same direction movement.
In what movements do we inhale?
Typically ascending movements and when we open the front of the body.
In what movements do we exhale?
Where we descend and when we open the back of the body.
How long do we traditionally hold static poses?
5 breaths
How long are forwards folds and strong inversions held for? Or can be.
25 to 30 breaths
