The Art of Alignment, Assisting, & Verbal Adjustment Flashcards
What are the 6 Principles of Adjusting?
- If the adjustment is uncomfortable for the adjuster, it will be uncomfortable for the receiver.
- To effectively stretch a muscle it has to be relaxed.
- The breath should be smooth and steady.
- Observe, decide, and adjust.
- Observe Ahimsa.
- Make adjusting Yoga.
Name the 3 main types of adjusting.
- Physical demonstration
- Verbal adjusting
- Physical adjusting
Name the 4 types of adjusting.
- Passive Adjustments (adjuster does the work while the student relaxes and lets the adjustment be done)
- Active Adjustments (where the adjuster and student work together to complete the adjustment)
- Resistance Adjustments (adjuster provides resistance while the receiver pushes against the resistance to move deeper into the pose)
- Partner Yoga (no longer separation between the adjuster and receiver)
Give an example of a passive adjustment.
Parivrtta Trikonasana, as you help the body to twist.
Give an example of a active adjustment.
Trikonasana, perhaps from stopping the crunching through the side body.
Give an example of a resistance adjustment.
Parivrtta Parsvakonasana.
Give an example of partner yoga adjustments.
I’ll let you know Saturday at 8pm.
How does proprioception work?
Sensory receptors in the muscles and tendons inform the central nervous system as to the varying length of muscles and of force/loads on the tendons; this lets us know where our body is and how it is in space.
