Muscles of the Shoulder Girdle and Upper Limbs Flashcards
Name the 4 muscles of the rotator cuff.
- Supraspinatus 2. Infraspinatus 3. Teres Minor 4. Subscapularis
What action does the Supraspinatus create?
Abducts the arm. Also holds the humerus from sliding out of the joint.
What 2 rotator cuff muscles always work together?
Infraspinatus and Teres Minor.
What action do the Infraspinatus and Teres Minor create?
External rotation.
What action does the Subscapularis create?
Internal rotation.
Which types of asanas are contra-indicated for a rotator cuff injury?
Arm balancing, strong twists, inversions with weight bearing on the arms, back bends (if injury is in Infraspinatus or Teres Minor).
Name the major muscles of the shoulder girdle and upper limbs.
The Deltoids (3), Biceps (2), Triceps (3), Serratus Anterior, Levator Scapulae, Pectoralis Minor, Rhomboids (2), Brachioradialis, Rotator Cuff.
Where are the Deltoids located and how do they work?
Around the shoulder cap (front to back). Anterior Deltoid, Lateral Deltoid, and Posterior Deltoid. If the Anterior Deltoid is working, the Lateral is assisting. If the Posterior Deltoid is working, the Lateral Deltoid is assisting. If the Lateral Deltoid is working, the Anterior and Posterior are assisting.
What movements are the Biceps responsible for?
Elbow flexion and they Supinate the forearm.
Where is the Serratus Anterior located and what movement does it create?
On the upper ribs and scapula (boxers muscle). Creates Protraction.
Where are the Rhomboids located and what movement do they create?
From the Thoracic and Cervical vertebrae to the scapula. Create retraction generally.
Where are the Triceps located and what movement do they create?
Under the upper arm along the humerus. Extends the forearm and adduction of the shoulder joint.
