Villi And Absorbtion Flashcards
Villi adaptations
After hydrolysis the smaller soluble products are absorbed by microvilli
The vili have a large surface area for absorption
Each villus has good capillary network and tubes called the lacteals which is part of the lymph system
They both rapidly remove absorbed molecules and contain a steep concentration gradient
The lining is made up of one layer of epithelial cells and the capillaries have one layer of endothelial cells - this ensures a short pathway for absorption
What are the adaptations of the epithelial cells
The cells have folds in them called microvilli further increasing surface area
The membrane contains more protein channels and carriers four more active transport , facilitated diffusion and co-transport
The cell contains more mitochondria for more atp production allowing more active transport
The cell has more ribosomes , RER and Golgi body for protein synthesis and modification to produce more membrane proteins
