cardiac cycle Flashcards

1
Q

what’s the unidirectional flow of blood advantages

A

ensures maximum efficiency in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to cells and removal of waste products ensuring that oxygenated and deoxygenated blood don’t mix
if they mix then the less oxygen in blood at capillaries

what’s systole and diastole

A

systole - contracts
diastole - relaxes

Q

whole heart diastole

A

heart relaxes and pressure drops
blood fills the atria from the veins (passive re filling)

Q

atrial systole

A

cardiac muscle in the atria contract
pressure increases
high pressure in the atria than the ventricles so then the atria-ventricular valve opens
blood forced into ventricle
valves in veins stop blood going back

Q

ventricular systole

A

ventricles contract from the base inward causing increase in pressure
ventricular pressure is higher than atria pressure shutting av valve
ventricular pressure is higher than the aorta opening semilunar valve blood is then forced through

Q

explain systole and diastole of ventricle on the elastic arteries

A

elastic recoil of arteries mean that they initially expand to accommodate the high volume of blood forced out ventricles
but then recoil decreasing the diameter of the vessel again maintaining high blood pressure and ensuring blood flow away from heart (ventricular dystole)
