How was Johnson conflicted?
Wanted a limited war with less troops but wanted to be able to leave S. Vietnam to be safe from communism at the same time
What did N. Vietnam and VC want for Vietnam?
A united Vietnam
Why did VC use guerilla warfare?
They were less well-armed than ARVN
Why was it a problem that anyone could join the VC?
Difficult for ARVN and US to distinguish between people who supplied food and info and proper VC members
How were tunnels used?
Vietminh used them against French
VC built 100 miles of tunnels just 25 miles from Saigon which connected to villages near Saigon for easy movement
Cu Chi tunnels had hospitals, weapons and living space but were too small for US troops.
How did US deal with Cu Chi tunnels being too small for US troops?
Initially used ‘tunnel rats’ but US ended up just bulldozing any tunnel entrances
How did US tactics worsen relations with S. Vietnamese?
Caused a lot of ‘collateral damage’
