Why do you want to work for TUI?
(Lifelong ambition

Not just customer service…
Long-lasting career
Summary)
LEEN LS
- I want to work for TUI because I have a deeply rooted, lifelong ambition to become an airline pilot, along with a strong passion for travel, and because TUI are the no. 1 integrated tourism business in the world, I genuinely believe that there’s no better place for me to achieve my dream.
- I’ve experienced the exceptional TUI customer service on past flights from my local Birmingham Airport and upon reflection, it was seeing the genuine excitement that the flight crew had to take people away that started my family’s trip off the right way and this actually always gave me a longing to be on the other side of the operation, at the pointy end. Just imagining the pilots sat at the front was inspiring.
- I will say that despite this, it’s not just the customer service aspect of TUI that intrigues me, but also the intense focus on sustainability. With the current strain on aviation with regard to high fuel prices and the direct impact of the industry on climate change, I need to know that my prospects of a lifelong career as an airline pilot are realistic, and having researched TUI Group, it’s very obvious that this is a future-proof company.
- With a fuel-efficient fleet and realistic, science-based targets, with a genuine passion to do good, I feel comfortable saying that should I be successful on this programme, my dream to have a long-lasting, secure career as a TUI pilot would be fulfilled.
- It’s a combination of the customer-focused nature, holiday spirit, and the focus on building a better planet at TUI that makes me play my part in this amazing airline.

- In short, this programme gives me a perfect chance to realise my lifelong ambition of becoming an airline pilot with a dream airline. The programme is also funded, giving me the chance of completing an integrated-style programme, which simply wouldn’t be possible for me otherwise.
- As you can imagine, this prospect is incredibly exciting, and the fact that it’s with such a trusted and reputable airline like TUI makes the opportunity even more golden, because suddenly the potential for a lifelong career is made available, including progression onto Captain, progression to becoming a dual-fleet pilot, and potentially to recruitment and training roles in the future, all of which are roles I’d be very interested in after seeing how TUI approach the recruitment process. I’d love to play my part in building the best-loved holiday company in this regard.
- Further to this, the MPL Cadet Programme itself, despite its intensity, will give me the means to channel my natural desire to learn new information. This is a desire and a motivation that only becomes stronger when I’m progressing towards my goals, so spending 19 months focusing on becoming a TUI Cadet Pilot will be something incredibly rewarding and enjoyable for me, especially with this programme being so organised and split into three very structured phases.
- After training, I’ll be in my dream office every day, equipped with a multi-crew pilot license, catered to TUI operations, whilst ensuring that my customers live happy, and are made to feel at home onboard.
- This programme therefore raises the opportunity for a career filled with both self and professional development, which will be pivotal in helping me to contribute to TUI’s journey to become the leaders in the travel industry as much as possible.
What are the skills and behaviours of a good (TUI) pilot?
(Customer-focused airline…
Best loved travel company…
Teamwork and collaboration…
Core competancies)
CBTC
- TUI are a customer-focused airline aiming to give a great start or end to passenger’s holidays. Good TUI pilots should therefore bring a palpable holiday spirit onto every flight, to help ensure that passengers see us as the best holiday airline. Behaviours that can help create this atmosphere could be greeting customers during boarding, and keeping them informed about their flight and exciting destination information throughout the journey, for example.
- For my D of E, I worked as a volunteer in a charity shop, regularly tasked with opening the store up for customers. I greeted them face to face, asking them how they were, and this resulted in a smooth and unique shopping experience for them, and I believe the development of these interpersonal skills would be beneficial when interacting with customers on TUI flights, as a pilot in the future.
- Another key skill of TUI pilots is teamwork and collaboration, as TUI is a rich and diverse company, with employees from over 100 countries worldwide. Because of this, it’s vital to have a passion for working with others, from amazing different backgrounds, as diverse teams obviously inspire new ways of thinking, that can lead to a unique and favourable passenger experience.
- In University, I was involved in the Global Engineering Challenge, which involved working in diverse groups to craft solutions to real world engineering problems. By valuing the differences in opinion that various members of my group often had, I was able to play to their strengths. As a result, we were able to present our unique ideas in front of a board of experts, and performed highly in a detailed Q&A session that followed. Ultimately, I believe that my experience with working in diverse groups would allow me to adapt quickly to the TUI environment.
What skills do you possess from past experience that will be beneficial to being a TUI pilot?
(McDonald’s…

Under pressure…
Responsibility over crew…)

- From past work experience at McDonald’s, I was able to develop my existing customer service skills further, by playing a key role in operations as a versatile crew member. This was in a restaurant that provides 24 hour service, and I regularly served up to 500 customers per shift, both face-to-face, and in the drive thru.
- I was regularly tasked with solving customer enquiries, some more simple than others, and in order to maintain a pleasant dining experience, the action I always took involved treating all customers as individuals and trying to go above and beyond to make up for whatever might have happened, for example if it was a family I might give them a happy meal toy after rectifying the main issue, just to go the extra mile.
- This is experience that would be of great value to TUI, because you’re an airline on a customer-driven mission; they are at the heart of operations, and providing a unique service and going the extra smile is what makes TUI stand out from the crowd.
- Further to this, I have also amassed around 25 hours of PPL experience, in effort of achieving my lifelong ambition to become an airline pilot. This involved achieving my first solo flight on my 16th birthday. My birthday is at the end of December too- so the weather was quite sub-optimal, to say the least.
- During this incredible experience, I quickly learned how to perform under pressure, whilst remaining calm in the process, ensuring that all memory items and procedures are followed to maintain the highest levels of safety.
- For an Airline Pilot, this is crucial in ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for the passengers and crew; having a distinct sense of responsibility over a couple of hundred people makes it all the more important to be able to remain calm under pressure, ensuring that TUI customers safely make it to their holiday destinations.
