Vibrations Flashcards
Fine
superficial and light, very brief and fast, minimal amplitude, barely visible movement
Coarse
larger amplitude of a vibration movement, see visible movement
Static
stationary, hand is in continuous contact with no movement over the body part or skin
Running
treatment hand is moving & in constant vibrating contact with the body part or skin
Uses of fine vibrations
Relief of pain associated with:
- acute muscle spasm
- neuralgia (pain along the course of a nerve, eg. Trigeminal neuralgia)
- neuritis (inflammation along the course of a nerve, eg. Intercostal neuritis)
- inflammation
- sinus congestion
Uses of coarse vibrations
• Maintain present muscle tone & decrease deterioration (must be innervated)
• Decrease pain
• Decrease muscle hypertonicity
• Decrease lymph congestion
• Decrease sinus congestion
• Increase expectoration
• Stimulate peristalsis
Effects of vibrations
• Increases superficial lymphatic return and decreases lymphatic congestion
• Has a sedative effect by stimulating cutaneous nerve endings therefore
reflexively decreasing pain and hypertonicity in muscles via gate theory of pain.
Coarse vibrations short duration treatments
less than 30 seconds, can have a mild stimulatory effect
Coarse vibrations longer treatments
30 seconds to 3 minutes, can have a sedative effect
Coarse vibrations CIs
• Acute muscle spasm
• Spastic Paralysis
• Low back, sacrum and abdomen during 1st trimester of pregnancy
