Apical Breathing
mainly uses the upper chest, or apex of the lungs
Little movement in the ribs and abdomen
Apical Breathing WHO
patients with respiratory dysfunctions such as asthma, with postural dysfunctions and patients in pain or under stress
Paradoxical Breathing
•abdomen does not appear to rise with inhalation
•abdominal muscles do not relax
•lateral rib motion and scalene muscles must compensate
Paradoxical Breathing WHO
patients that maintain a certain posture and are usually trained to breathe in this manner, such as dancers, figure skaters and gymnasts, pathology such as pneumothorax (collapsed lung), paralysis of diaphragm
