Who is legally allowed to supply and sell veterinary medicines with a valid prescription or for retail sale?

What is an AVR?
A veterinary medicinal product, and medicine used for treating/preventing disease in animals
What are specific offences relating to veterinary products?
- Placing a vet product on the market if it doesn’t have a marketing authorisation granted by the secretary of state
- administering a vet medicinal product to an animal unless it has MA, has to be administered in accordance with regulations
- supply a veterinary medicinal product past its sell by date
- supply product for human use for administration to an animal without an Rx given by a vet surgeon for administration under the cascade
What are the different classes of vet meds?
- POM-VPS
- AVM-GSL
- POM-V
- NFA-VPS
- SAES
- unauthorised vet meds
POM-VPS
-Rx only prescribed and supplied by vet surgeon/pharmacist/SQP on oral/written prescription. Rx required if supplier is not prescriber
POM-V
Rx only prescribed by vet surgeon. Supplied by vet surgeon or by pharmacist with written Rx
NFA-VPS
- non food animals
- supplied by vet surgeon/pharmacist/SQP
- Written Rx not required
AVM GSL
Authorised veterinary medicine available for general sale
SAEs
Exempt medicines under the small animal exemption scheme, unlicensed vet med that does not require MA
Unauthorised veterinary medicines
- unlicensed medicines
- don’t have marketing authorisation, not eligible for exemption
- can only be prescribed by vet surgeon under the cascade, can include human medicines that can be used for humans
Who can be in possession of vet medicines for wholesale sale or supply?
Only holders of a marketing authorisation or holders of manufacturing authorisation or holders of wholesale dealers authorisation to supply
Who can a veterinary medicine be supplied to?
Only people who may supply vet medicines by wholesale or by retail. If supply made to an SQP, must be done on their premises
What must be done when retail supply is made?
Person making the sale must give advice on the correct administration of the product, and adverse effects/warnings. Must be satisfied that the buyer is competent and will use for an appropriate purpose
What are the legal requirements for a POM-V prescription?
- Vet surgeon
- must carry out clinical assessment
- offence to supply more than the required amount
- product on Rx
- To person on Rx
- Rx written and signed by person entitled to do so
- name, address and signature of prescriber
- identification and species of animal and address
- date
- name, quantity, dose, administration instructions
- as directed not acceptable
- any warnings & withdrawal period
- under cascade
What needs to be included on a CD prescription for an animal?
- schedule 2/3, declaration needs to say ‘item has been prescribed for an animal or herd under the care of a veterinarian.
Usual CD prescription requirements
