Veterinary Client Patient Relationship (VCPR) Flashcards
What does VCPR stand for?
Veterinary client patient relationship.
Does a valid VCPR exist in this scenario?
A 13 year old M(N)Chihuahua was diagnosed at your clinic with congestive heart failure by one of the regular veterinarians. The dog is on Vetmedin and Furosemide and was doing well at his 1 week recheck with noticeable improvements on his chest X-rays. A follow up is booked for 2 months.
Yes. It would be appropriate for the veterinarian to refill this patient’s medications until the recheck appointment.
Does a valid VCPR exist in this scenario?
A 3 year old M(N) feline was seen for his yearly vaccines 3 weeks ago at the clinic. 2 days ago he started going to the litter pan frequently and crying while producing smaller than normal quantities of blood tinged urine. The owner has had another cat this problem and would like some pain control medications prescribed. She would also like a prescription flea control product.
No and yes. The lower urinary tract symptoms are a new problem and he needs to be seen to receive medications for that problem. Flea control can be prescribed but the priority in this case is for the urinary tract disease to be treated.
Should the veterinarian dispense in this scenario? The owner of a 4 year old F(S) Portuguese Water Dog calls up asking for 3 X Bravecto flavored tablets (flea control that lasts 3 months). The dog was last seen 9 months ago.
No. The prescription extends out beyond a year since the last last physical examination. It would be ok for the veterinarian to dispense 1 tablet and arrange for a yearly physical examination before dispensing any more.
Should the veterinarian dispense in this scenario? The owner of a 6 year old F(S) Domestic Short haired cat that was last seen 2 months ago calls up asking for a box of 6 X Revolution Plus for internal and external parasite control. The veterinarian that originally saw the pet has left the practice.
Yes. It is at their discretion but the rules in Nova Scotia allow a member of the NSVMA to dispense on behalf of another member as long as the prescription is current and verifiable.
