How do NSAIDs differ from steroids?
NSAIDs suppress inflammation but steroids suppress inflammation and the immune system.

The gastrointestinal (GI) and Renal (urinary) systems
What do gastrointestinal side effects of NSAIDs look like in dogs and cats?
Nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, black tarry stools.

What should a VA who is explaining NSAIDs to a client say regarding side effects?
Explain that giving the medication with food will reduce side effects and to stop the medication and contact the veterinarian if any of the following occur: reduction or loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy and black tarry stools.
