Vessels and Circulation Flashcards
What is found in blood?
Plasma, White blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets
What are the different types of blood vessels and their functions?
Arteries carry blood away from the heart.
Veins carry blood towards the heart.
Capillaries are the exchange location for blood and tissues.
What are the three different layers of a blood vessel’s walls?
Tunica Intima: inner lining of single layered cells
Tunica Media: middle layer of smooth muscle
Tunica Adventitia: connective tissue layer
Describe the differences between an artery and a vein.
Artery:
Carry oxygenated blood, more muscular, thicker walled, narrow lumen
Vein:
Carry deoxygenated blood, less muscular, thinner walled, wide lumen
What is the significance of an anastomoses?
Communication between branches of an artery in case blood needs to be rerouted - Collateral Circulation
What is the azygos system and its function?
Venous network that drains blood from the body walls and viscera into the superior vena cava
What is the function of the lymphatic system.
Drainage of surplus tissue fluids/plasma proteins.
Removal of disease/infection.
Helps reduce swelling.
What are the main lymphatic ducts of the body and where to they drain lymph from?
Right Lymphatic Duct: drains lymph from the upper right quadrant of the body of the body.
Thoracic Duct: larger and drains lymph from the rest of the body.
Cisternae Chyli: receives lymph from abdominal viscera.
