Vessel Parts/Location/fittings Flashcards
What is the bow
Front of vessel
What is the stern
Back of vessel
What does forward mean
Is the forward part of vessel (not directly bow but from mid ships to bow)
What is aft
From midships to backer part of vessel
What is port
Left side
What is starboard
Right side
Hull
The make of the boat. The bottom of vessels shape/material determines how boat moves through the water
Centerline
Symmetry line of boat from bow to stern
Midships
Middle section of the vessel
Waterline
Is the point on the hull where the water sits to rises
Bilge
Lowest part of a ships inner haul, water naturally pools, suction systems are in place to pipe extra water
What is the free board
Freeboard is the space between the waterline and the top deck, vessels are meant to have a determined distance of weight allowances for drought under certain weather conditions
Collision bulkhead
Walls in between each void to cut off from the other incase of an emergency. The collision bulkhead is the foremost bulk head to soften blow/cut off from rest of hull incase of fore collision
Scupper
Holes along bulworks so water accumulation on deck can drain
Bulworks
Sides of vessel above main deck
What is the keel
The structure beam that runs from now to stern, purpose is stability & control while moving
Freeing ports
Holes in the lower portion of bulworks to allow falling water flow off the deck
What is a bollard
Vertical axes tie up point on land for mooring lines. Usually thick centre with side bites
What are Cleats
Horizontal fixtures mounted on boats used to secure lines
Fairleads
A guide for a mooring line which enables the line to be passed through a ships bulworks
Describe use of an anchor
Provides means of mooring boats temporarily (leisure Stops/overnight) also important means to securing boat to seabed incase of emergency
Windlass
Horizontal axes wheel machine that restrains and manipulates anchor chain on a boat (usually found on larger/cargo ships)
Describe hatch covers
Prevents space to be protected from entry of water
Describe water tight doors
Prevent ingress of water from one compartment to another. Can withstand pressure from both sides found below waterline
