What are lateral Marks
The use of red or green colours at night or day to define port and starboard sides of a channel
What is a Modified Lateral mark
Are sometimes used to show where a channel divides, to indicate the preferred channel or primary route
What are Cardinal marks
Indicates the deepest water in the area lies to the named side of the mark
How to identify what a mark means
By day: colour/shape/top mark
By Night: colour/Ruth em of light
What is the conventional direction of voyage when entering a channel
Usually you try to remain as starboard to the channel as possible.
Though per specific channels/estuaries/harbours might have different requirements so refer to indicated chart in appropriate nautical documents
What colour is a port Lateral mark
Red
If approaching a channel at night what light/sequence will port lateral mark be identified as
RED light, any light rhythm other then composite flashing
What colour is the colour of Starboard lateral mark
Green
If you see a Lateral GREEN lateral mark with a Large RED horizontal stripe what does this mean
Preferred conventional direction of voyage is port side
When looking at a modified lateral mark indicating the conventional direction of buoyage is starboard at night, what will be the light flashing colour/sequence
Red - composite group flashing (2+1)
If there are numbers on the side of a channel, what do even numbers mean
Even numbers mean he conventional direction of voyage is Port
What do you do when you see a cardinal mark
A cardinal mark is named after the quadrant it is placed it, and should be passed on the indicated side. IE pass North of a north mark
What colour are cardinal marks
Always painted in yellow or black horizontal bands, cones always black
