A

Describe STAND ON

A

If one of 2 vessels is to keep out of way the other must keep its course and speed.

If the stand on vessel sees that the other is not taking appropriate action to give way, the stand on vessel must take appropriate action to avoid collision by its manoeuvre alone.

A

1) vessel over taking must keep out of way of over taken vessel

2) overtaking considered when a vessel is coming up on another vessels from a direction of 22.5segrees a aft it’s beam

3) if in any doubt as to whether it is over taking another, it must assume that it is and act accordingly.

Collision prevention

A

1) every vessel must use all available means appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions to determine if the risk of collision exists.

2)proper use/fitting must be made of radar equipment. Scanning to obtain early warning of collision risk

3) assumptions must not be made on the basis of scanty information ie radar

4) determination of risk must be considered if compass bearing of approaching vessel does not appreciatably change. Or if it does.

ACTION TO AVOID COLLISION

A

1) any alterations to course to avoid collision be large enough to be visually apparent to another vessel on radar (avoid small alterations)

2)if sea room allows it alterations are made; in good time, substantial, does not result in another close quarter situation

3)action must result in passing at safe distance, must be checked in monitored until the other vessel is past & clear

4)if necessary to avoid or allow more time to assess, slower passage/reverse
