Vertical Transportation Flashcards
Hydraulic elevators and types
Slow, limited in travel distance to 40’, not efficient, high risk of oil spillage below ground. 4 types: Direct plunger, holeless, roped hydro, telescoping holeless.
Traction elevators and types
Faster, smoother ride, long-distance, more efficient, last longer. 2 types: Geared and gearless.
Geared is slower, and has a bumpy ride but can lift heavier loads, max rise of 150’.
Gearless is faster, has a smoother ride. and can have a max rise of 2000’. Gearless can have a machine room or not.
Hoistway ventilation requirements
3.5% of hoistway area or 3 SF (whichever is bigger)
Accessible means of egress
Buildings over 4 stories. Building must be on emergency power.
Escalators
Max slope is 30-35 degrees
Max speed is 100-125 feet per minute
Min vertical clearance = 7’
Max capacity is 1.25 max people per tread
Max rise is 20-40 ft or 60 ft if supported at mid span
