Vertebral Column Flashcards
1
Q
Main Functions
A
- Support weight of torso, upper limbs, head
- Transmits weight of torso, upper limbs/head to the pelvis and then lower limbs
- orient torso allow free movement of upper limbs
- provide attachment for major muscles of torso and shoulders
- protect spinal cord
2
Q
Cervical Spine
A
- small concave curve (lordosis)
- 7 vertebrae
mobile section of spine
3
Q
Thoracic Spine
A
- Larger and convex curve (lordosis)
- 12 vertebrae
- Ribs attach (least mobile)
- main movement (left and right rotation)
4
Q
Lumbar Spine
A
- Concave (lordosis)
- 5 larger vertebrae
- Main movement - flexion/extension and lesser degree of lateral flexion
5
Q
Sacrum & Coccyx
A
- Sacrum = kyphosis
- Connection between the halves is sacroiliac joints
- legs are strong and fibrous, only small movement at these joints
6
Q
Intervertebral discs
A
- between all vertebrae
- function: provide weight-bearing and shock absorption & augment spinal flexibility
