Flexion
Bending at a joint to reduce the angle between joints
E.g. Retire
Extension
Straightening action to reduce the angle between body parts
E.g. Developee
Abduction
Lateral movement away from the midline of the body
E.g. Tendu to 2nd
Adduction
Lateral movement to the midline of the body
E.g. Tendu for 2nd to 1st
Circumduction
A combo of flexion, extension, abduction and adduction to create a circular motion
E.g. Ronde jambe
Hyperextension
Continuation of extension beyond the normal anatomical position
Elevation
To raise the shoulders
Depression
To lower the shoulders
Protraction
To round the shoulders
Retraction
To square the shoulders
Rotation
Twisting or turning of a bone on it’s longitudinal axis (can be medial/lateral)
Pronation
Where the sole of the foot or hand is turned downwards
Supination
Where the sole of the hand/foot is turned upwards
Inversion
Where feet turn inwards
Eversion
Where feet turn outwards
