Stages of Motor Development Flashcards
1
Q
Fundamental movement skill
A
- organised series of events that is involved in a combo of move patterns of 2 or more body segments. There are 3 categories: stability, locomotor or manipulative
2
Q
Motor development
A
- progressive change in one’s movement behaviour brought about by interaction of the individual with the environment and the task
3
Q
Specialised movement skill
A
- fundamental movement skill or combo of movement skills that have been applied to the performance of a specific sport-related activity (dance)
4
Q
Initial stage of phases of motor development
A
2-3 years
- children make observable and purposeful attempts at performing a task
- movements are characterised by relatively uncoordinated movements
- major components of movement are missing, and are not rhythmical, they are gross, exaggerated or inhibited
5
Q
Elementary stage of phases of motor development
A
4-5 years
- greater control and co-ordination
the rhythm of their movements improve
- movements are still fairly awkward and lacking fluidity
6
Q
Mature age of phases of motor development
A
6-7 years
- integration of all component parts of movement into a well co-ordinated, mechanically correct and efficient act
- failure to develop mature patterns of fundamental movements will limit children in acquiring specialised skills later
7
Q
Transition stage
A
7-10 years
- possess a high degree of interest but little ability
- students need to be given the opportunity to refine specific fundamental movements and to use them in a variety or drills or exercises
- needs lots of opportunity for practice and modification
8
Q
Application stage
A
11-13 years
- developed sufficient skills and knowledge of movement and can apply these to more complex arrangements
- preference for a type of activity is based on previously successful experiences, body type and emotional social and cultural factors
- narrowing of interests at this stage is accompanied by an increased desire for competence
- Form, precision, accuracy and standard of good performance are important at this stage
9
Q
Lifelong Utilisation stage
A
14+ years
- The final stage within specialised movement phase
- based on previous experience and fundamental skill stages
- in a period where individuals select activities they particularly enjoy.
