Active verb
Indicates that the subject of that verb is performing the action
Passive verb
Indicates that the subject is not performing the action.
Always consist of two words: a form of the “be” verb followed by the past participle.
Verb
A verb shows either action or state of being (existence).
Types of action verbs
Transitive or intransitive
Transitive verbs
Transitive verbs are followed by an object indicating who or what receives the action, e.g. he KICKED the ball.
Intransitive verbs
Verbs not followed by an object, e.g. he kicked.
State of being verbs
Forms of “be” — “am”, “is”, “are”, “was”, “were”, “ being”, “been”.
State of Being verbs present tense conjugated

State of being verbs past tense conjugated
I was. We were

State of being verbs perfect aspect (present/past) conjugated
I have/ had been. We have/have been

Linking verbs
A verb that links an adjective, noun, or pronoun to the subject
Linking verbs of sense
Tasted, smelled, looked, sounded, felt
Common linking verbs
Become, seem, appear, remain, turn, grow.
Essential characteristic of “be” and linking verbs
Whenever used as the main verb of a sentence we must follow it with an adjective that modifies the subject or with a noun or pronoun that renames the subject.
A be verb may also be followed by an adverb of time and place.
