A

An adverb modifies a verb, and adjective, or another adverb.

Examples:
She smiled [verb] DISCREETLY.
She is QUITE discreet [adjective].
She smiled VERY discreetly [adverb].

What questions do adverbs usually answer?

A

How?

What adverb form for answering the “how” question

A

Often end in “ly” e.g. quickly.
(NB friendly, neighborly, curly, burly, and surly are always adjectives).

“Not” also answers “how” by creating a negative condition.
E.g. she is not happy.

Adverb phrases or clauses

A

These extended adverbs can answer how, when, where, but can also answer “why” and “for what purpose”.

E.g. she walked BECAUSE SHE ENJOYED THE EXERCISE.

Best test for determining an adverb?

A

Test of movability: if you can move the word or phrase without changing the fundamental meaning, likely and adverb.

E.g. She walked quickly. She quickly walked.
