verbs
action words that describe what the subject of a sentence is doing
verbs can be
separated by other words (usually adverbs) and contracted
verbs are used to
put a motionless noun into motion, or to change its motion; link the subject of the sentence to something which describes the subject
action verb
an action someone can do
linking verb
an action someone can’t do
main/lexical verb
the important verb in the sentence, the one which shows the action of the subject
helping/auxiliary verbs
show the tense of the verb; also used in conditional sentences to create the state of condition
active verbs
used when writing in the active voice; emphasis is on the subject which is doing the action
passive verbs
used in the passive voice where the emphasis is on what is being done to the object of the sentence; key word by can often be used to identify the passive voice
verb tenses
simple present, present perfect, present continuous, present perfect continuous, simple past, past perfect, past continuous, past perfect continuous, simple future, future perfect, future continuous, future perfect continuous
simple present tense
formed by using the root form or by adding ‑s or ‑es to the end, depending on the person; used when an action is happening right now, or when it happens regularly
present perfect tense
formed by using the present tense of have + the past participle; used when an action began in the past yet is still relevant
present continuous/progressive tense
formed by using the present tense of be + present participle (the root word + ‑ing); used when something is happening at the same time we’re talking about it
present perfect continuous/progressive tense
formed by using the present tense of have + been + present participle (root + ‑ing); used with actions that began in the past and are still continuing
