Grammar: Conjunctions Flashcards
conjunctions
connect concepts, clauses, or parts of sentences
coordinating conjunctions
conjunctions that join two independent clauses, or two nouns, or two verbs, etc (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
correlative conjunctions
pairs of conjunctions that work together (either/or, neither/no, not only/but)
subordinating conjunctions
show a relationship between an independent and a dependent clause (because, since, as, although, though, while, whereas)
conjunctive adverbs
adverbs which join two clauses (also, besides, accordingly, finally, subsequently, therefore, thus, meanwhile, moreover, nonetheless, instead, however, indeed, hence, consequently, similarly, still); put a little break in the sentence, providing emphasis; frequently (but not necessarily) have a semi-colon before them
