Comparison
2 or more things, ideas, concepts, entities, or people are compared
Ellipsis
the omission of words that are understood without being stated
Ex/ I can kick a soccer ball harder than a pro player [can]
“like” vs “such as” and “including”
“like” - strictly a comparison word
“such as” and “including” - used when you introduce examples
“like” vs “as”
“like” - can only be used in comparisons of nouns or pronouns
“as” - used in a comparison of 2 clauses
Countable nouns
nouns with plural forms that name quantities made up of countable items. Number quantities are countable
Ex/ monkeys, apples, computers, 3000 people
Uncountable nouns
Ex/ air, concrete, olive oil
“Fewer”
countable
“Less”
uncountable
“Many”
countable
“Much”
uncountable
“Number”
countable
“Amount”
uncountable
Quantity words
these are uncountable. Ex/ time, weight, money
Ex/ the tank contains less than two gallons of water
“whereas”, “while”, “although” VS “unlike”
“unlike” - connects clauses that are similar ONLY
“whereas” - “in contrast with the fact that”. Clauses connected by “whereas” do not have to be exactly similar
“while”/”although” - work similar to “whereas”
