Antecedent
noun that a pronoun refers to. Repetition of the antecedent is not considered redundant on the GMAT
Can possessive nouns be antecedents?
Yes. Ex/ boss’ car, California’s climate
Pronouns that refer to “each” and “every”
These pronouns must be singular
Is “its” singular or plural?
Singular
Is “their” singular or plural?
Plural
Who vs Whom
Who/whoever = subject
Whom/whomever = plural
Tip: replace who/whom with he/him. If the sentence is correct with he then use who. If the sentence is correct with him then use whom
Gerund
a form of verb ending in -ing and is used as a noun. Gerunds are often preceded by possessive nouns
Demonstrative pronoun
takes the place of a noun and always stands alone. They do not refer directly to their antecedents. Ex/ this, that, these, those
Expletive “it”
does not refer to any noun and is considered a “placeholder subject” that does not express any meaning. “It” often stands in for something that appears later in a sentence
