Clause
subject + finite verb
Finite verb
verb that answers the question “When did the action occur?”
Independent clause (IC)
has a clause AND can stand alone as a sentence. Correct SC questions have at least 1 IC
Subordinate clause (SC)
subordinating conjunction + subject + finite verb
Subordinating conjunction is at the beginning of the sentence
Sentence
Subject + main verb
Compound sentences
has at least 2 IC clauses connected by FANBOYS
Coordinating conjunctions
FANBOYS - for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Semi colons
Used to connect 2 IC
Colons
An IC, series, or example follow a colon
A complete thought must precede a colon
Complex sentence
Has 1 IC and at least one SC
Adverb
They describe verbs and tell us when an action took place
Compound complex sentences
More than 1 IC and at least 1 SC
Relative clause (RC)
Begin with relative pronouns. If the relative pronoun is not the subject of the RC, it becomes optional
Relative pronouns
That, which, who, whom, whose, where, when
Noun clauses (NC)
1) Clauses that take the place of a noun
2) They begin with relative pronouns
3) They can contain the main verb
Direct object
Noun or pronoun that recieves the action of the finite verb. They can be noun clauses also
Prepositions
Class of words that express relationships
