Appositive
modifies another element of a sentence by renaming it. E/ My brother John loves hiking (John is the appositive)
Compound subject
subject composed of multiple nouns joined by the coordinating conjunction “and” or “or”. Ex/ the boy and girl. Make sure to match the verb to the subject as a whole
Additive phrases
phrases that begin with “along with”, “as well as”, “in addition to”, “together with”, “accompanied by”. The subject of the sentence is not within these phrases
Or, either..or, and neither..nor
Sentences and clauses with compound subjects that are joined by these conjunctions must have a verb that agrees with the subject noun closest to the verb
Inverted sentence
sentence where the finite verb comes before the subject
Collective nouns
nouns that name groups of people or things. They are almost always considered singular. Ex/ team, crowd, choir, crew, etc
Majority and minority
Collective nouns that are considered singular or plural based on the context of the sentence
Every, each, many a, many an
when a subject begins with these words, the subject always takes a singular verb
Antecedent
a pronoun that refers to a noun
Relative pronouns
refer to a noun and also is singular or plural
Indefinite pronoun
pronoun that does not refer to any one thing in particular
Singular indefinite pronoun examples
anybody, anyone, anything, everybody, everyone, everything, nobody, nothing, somebody, whoever, whatever
Plural indefinite pronoun examples
both, few, many, several
SANAMM
unique indefinite pronouns. when a SANAMM refers to a singular noun its singular and when it refers to a plural noun its plural
