What are absolute clauses?

A

Adverbial clauses that has its own subject, and has a participle as its verb or no verb at all:

THE DINNER HAVING BEEN PREPARED, I had time to take a nap.

If a different subject standing before the -ing participle is personal it must be in its COMMON CAUSE:

He being asked to give a report, we prolonged the session.

What is adverbial, attributive, and appositive infinitive?

A

Adverbial infinitive -most often used in purpose clauses:

She arrived in time to watch the parade.

Attributive infinitive: post-modification of head nouns of complex NPs
The actor to play Romeo

Appositive:
Our decision to climb the mountain…
Their wish to go there…

What is the difference between gerund and -ing participle?

A

Gerund: S, Obj, Complements, can be modified as a noun, can be preceded by prepositions
-ng participle: can be a part of complex VP, can function as a condenser of finite subordinate clauses:

The boy sitting there <- condensed relative clause
Condensation of various adverbial and nominal clauses

both can show the grammatical categories but have different syntactic functions.
