Venous Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Superior Vena Cavae
A
Drains head, shoulder, upper extremities
2
Q
Inferior Vena Cavae
A
Drains all regions below diaphragm
3
Q
What veins drain into the SVC?
A
- Ulnar and radial
- Median cubital
- Basilic and cephalic (surface veins)
- Brachial
- Axillary
- Subclavian
- Brachiocephalic
- Jugulars (drain brain)
- Azygos (only found on right side; drains thoracic cavity)
4
Q
What veins drain into the IVC?
A
- Tibial, peroneal
- Popliteal (kneecap)
- Femoral (thigh)
- Great Saphenous (used in heart bypass)
- Common iliac (external and internal iliac)
- Hepatic (liver; NOT the portal vein)
- Lumbar vein (posterior abdominal wall)
- Gonadal vein (ovaries and testes)
- Suprarenal (drain adrenal glands)
- Renal (kidney)
- Inferior Phrenic (diaphragm)
5
Q
Venous Drainage of Head and Brain
A
- External jugular
- Internal jugular
- Vertebral veins
- Subclavian veins
6
Q
What veins look like honeycombs?
A
Hepatic
7
Q
Liver Circulation
A
- Portal vein carries deoxygenated blood from organs of digestion to liver
- Hepatic vein carries blood from liver to IVC
8
Q
Fetal Circulation
A
- Umbilical vein brings blood from placenta to fetus
- Ductus venosus bypasses fetal liver to IVC of fetus
- Two umbilical arteries bring blood from fetus to placenta
9
Q
Fetal Heart
A
- Lungs not used for gas exchange
- Foramen ovale shunts blood from right atrium to left atrium
- Ductus arteriosus- connection between pulmonary artery and descending aorta.
- Kept open by prostaglandins (aspirin counteracts this)
