Venous Drainage System Flashcards
what is the venous drainage system?
occurs through an array of sinuses and veins
functions to remove deoxygenated blood, harmful materials and circulate CSF fluid from the brain
where are sinuses
btw periosteal and meningeal dural layers, goes with the folds of the meninges
what are sinuses
drainage system that lacks valves
what are the two different sinuses found
straight superior inferior sagittal sinuses found in the falx cerebri
cavernous sinus drains the opthalmic veins, mainly lower frontal area (shorter route)
straight superior inferior sagittal sinus
straight (great cerebral vein and inferior sagittal sinus) to the superior & inferior sinus to the confluence of sinuses to the transverse to the sigmoid to the internal jugular vein
cavernous sinus
cavernous (opthalamic vein) to the superior and inferior pertrosal to the internal jugular vein
veins
carry blood & CSF out of brain tissue and deposit into dural sinuses
superficial veins
superior cerebral veins
superficial middle cerebral veins
inferior cerebral veins
superior anastomotic veins and inferior anastomotic veins (supporting veins)
superior cerebral veins
drains superior surface of each hemisphere
to the superior sagittal sinus
superficial middle cerebral vein
drains lateral surface of each hemisphere
to the cavernous sinus
inferior cerebral veins
drains inferior aspect of each hemisphere
cavernous sinus & transverse sinus
superior anastomotic vein
connects superficial middle cerebral vein to superior sagittal sinus
inferior anastomotic vein
connects superficial middle cerebral vein to transverse sinus
deep veins
anterior cerebral vein
deep middle cerebral vein
subependymal veins –> basal veins of rosenthal, internal cerebral veins, great vein of galen
medullary veins
anterior cerebral vein
drains deep middle regions of each hemisphere
to transverse sinus
