function: increase attention to sensory, sleep/wake cycle, fight or flight, memory storage, emotional control

location: hypothalamus and midbrain, found mostly outside CNS since secreted by hypothalamus
function: allergic response, alertness, contraction of smooth muscle in lungs, uterus and stomach, vasodilator
