Venous drainage Flashcards
What is the pathway of blood drainage from the brain?
Fine veins (brain) → pial venous plexuses → cerebral veins → dural venous sinuses → internal jugular vein → heart
emissary veins
allow veins from the scalp to travel to the dural venous sinuses
Where are the venous sinuses located?
between two layers of the dura mater and are protected by the dura
What does the venous sinus receive?
blood from the brain and scalp and SCF from the arachnoid villi
superior sagittal sinus
lies among the superior margin of the falx cerebri. it joins the transverse sinus (on the right). the arachnoid villi drain the CSF into the superior sagittal sinus
inferior sagittal sinus
lies along the inferior margin of the falx cerebri. it joins the straight sinus
straight sinus
located within the tentorium cerebelli. the blood drains into the left transverse sinus
transverse sinus
the movement of the blood is left continuous with he straight sinus and right continuous with the superior sagittal sinus
sigmoid sinus
has a forward continuation of the transverse sinus. it opens into the internal jugular vein
cavernous sinus
there are two - one for each hemisphere. they are lateral to the pituitary gland, linked with he venous channel. it drains into the superior and inferior petrosal sinuses
superior petrosal sinus
drains into the transverse sinus
inferior pastoral sinus
drains directly into the internal jugular vein
How can infection occur in the emissary veins?
if there is an infected scalp, the bacteria can enter through the venous sinus and go through the meninges into the brain. this can result in meningitis
