Considerations when performing venepuncture
A
Ensure vessel is not pulsating, bleeding profusely. Could be an artery?
Beware of damaging valves, try to avoid where vein bifurcates.

Maintaining indwelling medical devices, such as IV infusion.

Where should tourniquet be placed?
A
Place 7-8cm above needle insertion point.
Helps identify vein
May need to be released and then put back on prior to blood sampling

How long should a torniquet be on for?
A
Not longer than 1 minute, otherwise blood results may be affected

State some superficial veins in the arm
A
Cephalic vein
Median cubital vein
Median anti brachial vein
Basilic vein
