-Vectors Flashcards
What is a vector and a scalar?
A vector is a quantity with both magnitude and direction (eg. velocity or displacement)
Whereas a scalar has magnitude but no direction (eg. speed)
What is Newton’s third law?
When two objects interact, they exert equal but opposite forces on each other.
What is Newton’s first law?
If forces acting on an object are balanced the resultant force is 0 meaning a stationary object will remain still, or an object at a constant velocity will stay at a constant velocity.
What is a moment?
the turning effect of a force.
How can you increase the impact of a moment?
-increase the length of which the force is applied on.
-increase the effort put in
What is the formula for moments?
moment (Nm) = force (N) x perpendicular distance from the pivot (m)
Gear A is twice as big as gear B, compare their turning effects:
Gear A has double the turning effect of gear B. this is because when both do a full round, gear A would make more impact than B.
What is centre of mass?
the point of an object where its mass is mostly concentrated.
