Motion graphs (distance and time) Flashcards
When the speed/velocity of an object is changing what is it called?
Acceleration
What is acceleration?
The change of speed/ velocity of an object over a given time.
=difference in speed/ time taken
m/s2 = m/s ÷ s
What Is momentum?
The amount of force required to make an object come to a stop from it in action.
What is the formula for speed?
Speed (m/s) = distance (m) / time (s)
How do you calculate average speed?
Total distance / Total time
On a distance time graph what does the gradient equal to?
The speed
On a distance time graph what does it mean if the shape of the gradient is straight (at an angle)?
Constant speed.
On a distance time graph what does it mean if the gradient is curved?
Speed is changing, the object is accelerating.
On a distance time graph what does it mean if the gradient is fully horizontal?
The object is stationary.
On a distance time graph what does it mean if the gradient is positive and straight?
The speed is at a constant rate.
On a distance time graph what does it mean if the gradient is straight and negative?
The speed is at a constant speed going in the opposite direction .
On a distance time graph how do you calculate the average speed of a curve?
Draw a tangent and then calculate the gradient.
What is velocity?
A vector quantity that shows us the speed and direction of an object.
What is the formula for acceleration?
Acceleration (m/s2) =Change in velocity (m/s) / time (s)
How do you describe acceleration?
The object has increased their speed by …m/s every second for … seconds.
