VB Theory Flashcards
Valence Bond Theory
purpose:
How covalent bonds form
Used to show how orbitals form, subsequent molecular geometry
orbital overlap
the sharing of space between the valence orbitals of two atoms
Hybrid orbitals
the mixture of atomic orbitals to form new orbitals bearing properties of the mixed orbitals
Hybridization
the mathematical operation which is used to explain the mixing of atomic orbitals to form hybrid orbitals
sigma bond (σ)
a single bond formed by an overlap region in the center of two nuclei; forms a cylindrical overlap; forms from s, p, or hybrid orbitals
pi bond (π)
a multiple bond (double or triple) formed after a sigma bond has already formed, and forming from the sideways overlap of two p orbitals
