Unit 1: Intro Flashcards
What is chemistry?
The Study of the composition & changes to matter and energy in the universe
What is matter?
Anything which has mass and occupies space
What is mass?
the amount of matter
What is Energy?
2 types?
The ability to do work or transfer heat
Potential and Kinetic
What is Potential Energy?
Stored Energy; energy of position or composition
What is Kinetic Energy?
Energy being used / applied / in action
What is the Law of Conservation of Matter?
There is no observable change in the quantity of matter during a chemical reaction or during a physical change
What is the Law of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed in a chemical reaction or in a physical change. It can only be converted from one form to another
Reactions occur in two types:
Exothermic – processes in which energy is released to the surroundings, usually heat
- burning
Endothermic – processes in which energy is absorbed from their surroundings
- melting ice
Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy – The combined amount of matter and energy in the universe is fixed
What is the Scientific Method?
Framework for discovery
Hypothesis
a falsifiable attempt to explain an observation or series of observations in a common sense way
Theory
a hypothesis or series of hypotheses which have been supported experimentally, and makes predictions about future systems.
Law
a falsifiable statement which summarizes a large body of observed behaviour, and makes predictions about future systems.
