Vasovagal Syncope Flashcards
What is Vasovagal Syncope?
Fainting in response to a stressor, such as an emotional trigger.
This condition is characterized by a loss of consciousness due to decreased cerebral perfusion.
What triggers Vasovagal Syncope?
An initial sympathetic response followed by an excessive parasympathetic response.
Stressors can be emotional or physical.
What happens during the parasympathetic response in Vasovagal Syncope?
Peripheral arterioles dilate and the heart rate slows excessively.
This leads to decreased cerebral perfusion and as a result lightheadednessee and fainting.
How can Vasovagal Syncope be diagnosed?
Using a tilt-table test that reproduces symptoms.
This test helps to confirm the diagnosis by simulating the conditions that trigger syncope.
Treatment of vasovagal syncope
Reassurance, avoidance triggers, and counter pressure maneuvers
