Indications of Vasopressin
Alternative vasopressor to the first or second dose of Epinephrine in cardiac arrest, alternative to epinephrine in asystole, PEA
Mechanism of action of Vasopressin
Stimulation of smooth muscle receptors. Potent vasoconstrictor when given in high dose.
Contraindications of Vasopressin
Use with caution in patients with coronary artery disease, epilepsy, or heart failure.
Adverse effects of Vasopressin
Dizziness, headache, bronchial constriction, MI, chest pain, angina, cardiac dysrhythmia, decreased cardiac output, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, NV, paleness, seating.
Precautions of Vasopressin
May provoke an increase in peripheral
Vasculature resistance, may also provoke
Cardiac ischemia and angina
Adult dose of Vasopressin
40 units one time dose IV/IO to replace the 1st or 2nd dose of epinephrine in cardiac arrest.
Pedi dose of Vasopressin
0.4 to 1 unit/kg IV/IO. Maximum single dose of 40 units
