Vasodilators Flashcards
Vasodilators Action
Acts directly on the vascular smooth muscle to cause vasodilation & decrease BP. It also results in decreased peripheral vascular resistance causing an increase in cardiac output
Vasodilator Drugs (HNM)
Hydralazine, Nitroprusside, Minoxidil
Indications for Vasodilators (SHM)
Severe Hypertension
Hypertensive Emergencies: BP 180/120 mmHG
Malignant Hypertension: organ damage caused by elevates diastolic BP 130-140 mmHg
Vasodilators Adverse Effects (AARGC)
Abnormal hair growth Anxiety Reflex tachycardia GI upset Cyanide toxicity w/nitroprusside: cherry/pink skin, headache, dizziness, tachycardia
Contraindications for Vasodilators
Allergy
Caution with Vasodilators (Triple Cs PT)
Cerebral insufficiency Coronary Artery Disease CHF Peripheral vascular disease Tachycardia
Drug interactions with Vasodilators
Based on individual drug
Nurse Considerations
Encourage lifestyle changes
Monitor BP & any situation that may cause fluid depletion
