Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker Drugs
End in -SARTAN
Candesartan, Irbesartan, Losartan, Olmesartan, Telmisartan, Valsartan
Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers Action
Blocks angiotensin II from binding on the receptors of the vascular smooth muscle & in the adrenal cortex.
Prevents vasoconstriction & the release of aldosterone
Indications for ARBs (Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers)
Congestive Heart Failure
Hypertension
Diabetic Nephropathy Prevention
ARBs Adverse Effects (Hs, GI, R, CNS)
Temporary loss of consciousness r/t to hypotension (syncope), headache, dizziness, & weakness
N/V, abdominal pain
Skin rash
Hyperkalemia
Renal damage r/t inadequate blood flow to the renal artery
Contraindications for ARBs (PA)
Pregnancy- BLACK BOX WARNING
Allergy
Caution with ARBs
Liver/kidney dysfunction
Hypovolemia
Drug Interactions for ARBs
NSAIDs & other RAAS drugs
Nurse Considerations
Assess liver impairments & liver fx labs
Administer with or w/out food
Administer with food if pt has GI effects
