Vasculature of the CNS Flashcards
What makes up the anterior circulation?
Internal carotid artery to the cerebrum
What is the primary source of blood for the cerebral hemispheres?
The Internal carotid artery
What makes up the posterior circulation?
Vertebral arteries which are very important, supply cerebrum, cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord’s upper level
What are the components of the internal carotid artery
Cervical - neck portion
Petrous - carotid canal
Cavernous - cavernous sinus
Cerebral - which has branches; the anterior and middle cerebral arteries
What is the Opthalamic artery and what is it a branch of
The opthalamic artery is an artery to the eye that comes off the Internal carotid artery at the “siphon”
What are the branches of the Opthalamic artery?
Central artery of the retina
Subraorbital and supratrochlear arteries
What is the significane of the central artery to the retina?
if you lose it, you will lose your vision
What passes over the foramen lacerum?
The internal carotid artery
What is supplied by the anterior cerebral artery?
The medial frontal and parietal lobes
What is supplied by the middle cerebral artery?
The frontal, parietal, and temporal lobes
Occlusion of what artery accounts for 90% of infarcts and 2/3 of strokes?
Middle cerebral artery
What is supplied by the posterior cerebral artery?
The occipital lobe
Where does the vertebral artery come from?
It is a branch off the subclavian artery and joins to form the basilar artery
What does the vertebral artery supply?
It supplies the medulla, part of the cerebellum, and dura of the posterior cranial fossa
What is formed by the joining of the vertebral arteries, and proceeds rostrally?
The Basilar artery
