Vasculature of the brain Flashcards
Location of the internal and external jugular vein in relation to sternocleidonmastoid
External - superficial
Internal - deep
What does the retromandibular vein drain from? and where does it drain to?
side of the head/ superficial temporal vein/ and facial vein and can either drain superifically to the external jugular vein or deeply to the internal jugular vein.
what are the two main arteries that supply the brain and where are they located?
internal carotid - anterior
vertebral artery - posteriorly
Where does the vertebral artery supply blood?
- cerebellum
- posterior aspect of the brain
Where does the internal carotid artery supply blood in the brain?
- temporal lobes laterally
- frontal lobes anteriorly
- parietal lobe superiorly
What does the internal carotid artery branch off to
- middle cerebral artery
- anterior cerebral artery
Where does ischamic stroke normally occur?
In the middle cerebral artery because normally the thrombus dislodge from internal carotid arteries which has direct access to middle.
Where does hemorhagic stroke normally occur
anterior and posterior communicating arteries
branches of the middle cerebral arteries
Circle of Willis - try to draw this out in your head and imagine the order from the back
ventebral basialr posterior cerebral posterior communicating middle cerebral/ internal carotid aterior cerebral with anterior communication in the middle
What region do they following arteries supply:
- anterior cerebral artery
- middle cerebral artery
- posterior cerebral artery
anterior - anteromedial
Middle - lateral
posterior - both medial and lateral parts of the posterior cerebrum
Within the cranial vault, what does the vertebral arteries branch off too?
- Meningeal branch - supplies sheet of dura mater
- anterior and posterior spinal arteries - supplies spinal cord
- Posterior inferior cerebellar artery - suplies cerebellum
- two vertebral arteries converge to form basilar artery which supplies cerebellum and pons.
How does the vertebral arteries enter the cranial cavity?
via foramen magnum
What hole does the vertebral artery pass through to the posterior aspect of the neck?
Foremen transversarium (holes in the transverse processes of the cervical vertebrae.
Where does the vertebral arteries come from?
subclavian arteries
What arteries does the ICS give rise to:
- Ophthalmic - supplies orbit
- posterior communicating artery - connecting vessel in circle of willis
- anterior choroidal artery - supply structures important for motor control and vision
- Anterior cerebral artery - supplies part of cerebrum
- middle cerebral artery - lateral portions of the cerebrum
