Where is the primary sensory cortex
Postcentral gyrus
Where is the primary motor cortex
Precentral Gyrus
Where does gustatory cortex receive information from and via which nerve? What part of the gustatory cortex picks up this information?
Taste receptors at tongue, soft palate, pharynx and upper oesphagus convey info via facial, glossopharyngeal and vagus nerves to the nucleus solitarius
What is the function of broca’s areas? what would happen if its damaged?
speech and language function
damage = expressive dysphasia
What is the function of Wernicks area?
What would happen if its damaged?
Speech and language
Damage = receptive dysphasia
Function of the primary visual cortex? Where is it located?
Vision
Located on the occipital pole, bellow the calcarine sulcus
What parts of the brain is involved in the coordination fo movement?
- basal ganglia/nuclei
- cerebellum
- thalamus
- substantia nigra
- subthalamic nuclei
What does basal ganglia/nuclei refer to? What does the damage to this cause?
subcortical grey matter structures
Damage = movement disorders such as parkinsons or huntingtons
What does Caudate nucleus do?
involved in the control of movements and learning
What does putamen do?
control of movement
What doe the olfactory bulb do?
sense of smell
what does the pituitary gland do?
secrete hormones
What is the hippocampus involved in
Involved in memory formation and navigation
Turns short term memory into long term
What does the medulla oblongata do?
- site of some cranial nerves
- controls breathing, blood pressure and heart rate
What does the hypothalamus do?
Regulate autonomic nervous system (ANS), involved in hormonal activity, connects hormones and nervous system, regulate blood pressure, body temperature and overall homeostasis.
